What is mass extinction?

A mass extinction is a widespread and sudden decrease in biodiversity on the planet due to some geological phenomenon. The extinction event may happen gradually with some phases of extinction. There are 5 mass extinctions so far happened in the earth history.

They are given below;

1.    Late Ordovician 
2.    Late Devonian 
3.    Permian-Triassic 
4.    Triassic- Jurassic 
5.    Cretaceous Paleogene
